We were lucky with Hurricane Irene and Alexandria missed the excitement. Just to be sure, we
battened down the hatches (or at least tied up the backyard chairs and hose and cleared off the front
porch). Robert devised an excellent hurricane wind speed indicator (after the storm the duct tape
was missing so we know it was a real hurricane).
Then we hunkered down to wait. Robert enjoyed some time "charging" my laptop in case
we lost power (we did, but only sporadically). It was windy and rainy, but no real excitement for
us from Irene.
Our excitement was a unexpected and pleasant visit from David Z. He was dropping Ian off at
Columbia and looking for a way back to Seattle. With New York airports closing (not to mention subway
closing), he managed to get a flight out of Washington National Sunday night and so came down for a quick visit.
After all was said and done, we had one small branch down (the ruler was meant to show it was
about four feet long).
While David went off to visit other friends, we took Johnathan and Meagan with us to check out the
flooding down by the river. Just as the poor weather guys said on the 11 o'clock news, there wasn't
any. The river was actually pretty calm when we checked it out -- winds picked up later in the day.
