One of Robert's camps this summer (the final one this summer, actually) was Synetic Theater where he joined a troupe producing an adaptation of Tolkien's The Hobbit. In just two weeks they learned the story (Robert was, of course, already well versed in The Hobbit), cast the roles and learned their lines and positions. It was a lot of fun and Sarah and I both got to watch the final performance this afternoon.
Not all the actors were new to Robert, that's Max on the far right as one of the three trolls. The three in the middle are the cook fire. Below left, in the back, is Robert as an elf of Rivendell. The dwarf part is on the left. And below right is Gandalf freeing the adventures from the goblins.
On the right, in the center, is Robert the spider about to lose out to two dwarves who have been freed from their webbed bonds. And below are the lake people of the Dale celebrating the arrival of the Thoren and his plan to rid the mountian of the dragon Smog. Robert is third from right below; Max is third from right in the photo below and to the right. And Dylan is fourth from the right in the photo below Robert.
Bilbo (one of the age-10-and-over actors, as were all the dwarves) slaying Smog the dragon below left. And the troupe lines up for their bow below right.
The kids did not spend all their time rehersing, they also did some painting and three dimensional art to get into the Middle Earth mood. Robert has already decided that he'd like to go back next year, when he'll graduate from "Young Star" to "Thesbian."
