We took advantage of the very mild February weather and headed out to Difficult Run for a short hike. The weather was cooperative and we had a fun time tromping through the woods and playing Pooh sticks.
Difficult Run itself was a little low and rocky. And I admit to having a hard time seeing where Hank and I ran some of the rapids. I know we walked one; that being the better part of valor.
Never let it be said that we passed up any chance to build a sand castle.
This construction is on the plateau where Difficult Run joins the Potomac (visible in the background).
Well... So there was one small problem. The trail was closed due to a washout. We stared at the sign for a bit, watched someone else walk on by and then followed their lead. When we arrived at the washed out part, it became clear why the trail was closed: there was a steep scramble up the the side or a very narrow ledge above the water. If you look carefully (maybe in the big_ version), you can see Robert wiping out on his way back down to the trail. No serious injuries were sustained, but he does have some new battle scrapes. |
