The note which I forwarded in 2004 about a possible connection between Theophilus Williams
and Lieutenant James Williams of Revolutionary War fame at Kings Mountain should be removed
as such connection has been disproved by DNA evidence per following report.
Thanks, Leland

Subject: Re: Looking For Info On Lieutenant James Williams
The James Williams who died at King Mountain (actually Col or Gen. Williams) is no kin to us as my DNA does not match his decendents or records of his family. There is a book written on his life and a chapter of the DAR named after him in Edgefield. There are, however, other Williams' who do match my DNA and with the info given on your "Odem/Williams" conection from Edgefield I will attempt to use their family history to find an Edgefield link.
I will see you at Willow Swamp in May.
Jimmy
And so I've removed the following from The Early Days of the Williams Family:
Leland sent this along from the 2004 Williams/Tyler family reunion:
Burrell R. Williams (203 Treeland Dr., Ladson, SC 29456, Tel 843-873-1805) came to the
reunion with two documents [only one here] which are attached for your information. About a year ago, I
had responded to his entry in the Palmetto Genealogy section of the Spring 2003 issue of
"Carologue" wherein he was asking for info about Theophilus Williams. The
first file is a page from RootsWeb.com which includes a posting from Anna dated 11 Oct 2001, which
goes as follows:
"Lieutenant James Williams was of welch descent, and died in battle of Kings Mountain while
leading his command in the Revolutionary War. My records show that James had only one son,
Theophilus who was born Dec 6, 1777. Theophilus married Lydia who was born on May 13, 1788."
There follows a listing of children of Theophilus and Lydia; the listing is the same as in
Wyman's book except for a different birth date for John Williams (corrected in writing by
Burrell, I presume) and two minor spelling discrepancies. Anna is looking for info on Lt.
James Williams. Her e-mail address is included.
[The page graphic is linked to a larger copy; however, as of July 2004, it is still
available
in the original.]addition

Dave is it?
My cousin Shirley and I are working on our own Williams
Family tree and she ran across the Williams-Tyler website
and pointed it out to me recently.
"To make a long story short" We believe your ancestors
may be ours also, so I am writing today regarding any
additional info you may have on the children of one of
the Theophilus Williams's you have listed.
According to your website: Theophilus (b1777) and Lydia
had Theophilus Darius Williams (b1808) who married
Eleanor and had several children that show in the 1850
census then had two additional (a John and an Ellen) that
show up in the Lexington County 1860 census. Do you have
any more information on the child John who was listed?
My father was Hiram Johnson Williams, son of Hiram Jasper
Williams and grandson of John Williams. Hiram Jasper and
John are both buried in the Canaan Baptist Church
Cemetery in Cope, SC where my dad grew up.
I have enjoyed reading about your family and hope to here
more from you regarding a possible connection.

Dave,
I was in contact recently with Walt Baggott. He told me a Baggott researcher said that Theophilus Williams' wife was named Lydia. The researcher said that she was earlier married to a Baggott (Parker if my memory serves me right). Baggott had settled in NC. He and wife Lydia moved to SC (late 1700s) where Parker Baggott disappeared. Lydia then married Theophilus Williams. Family say that Parker Baggott was killed by the Indians but others say he left his family for another woman. It was also said that perhaps Lydia's maiden name was a Williams.
For whatever this is worth. I lost contact with Walt. He was in bad shape and may be in a nursing home.

8/18/2015:
I came across the Tyler family information on your website recently and wanted to make a few observations.
I have been conversing with Mr. Al Brodie for a few years with regard to the linking of William Tyler,
husband of Ann Carter, to Francis Tyler and Anne Strother.
Research done by a descendant of Francis Tyler and Anne Strother shows that their son William Tyler went to
Columbia County, Georgia where he died, without issue, in 1805 or early 1806. The Henry Tyler listed
below is the brother of William and the ancestor of the other researcher.
Smith, Patricia Doyle, [Columbia Co., GA Courthouse Records 1805-1816]
On 5 May 1806, letters of administration on the estate of William Tyler were issued to William Berry,
William McGee, Benjamin Leigh, and Anderson Crawford by order of a decree of the Superior Court of
Columbia Co., GA. Joseph Allen, one of the first administrators was dead, and Mrs. Ann Tyler had married
William Berry.
On 15 Nov 1806 the said administrators made a deed to William Berry for 260 acres of land which was the
plantation and residence of William Tyler, deceased. William Berry in right of his wife, late Ann Tyler,
relict of William Tyler, deceased. Henry Tyler, of Oglethorpe Co., Georgia, Alice Allen and Maragaret Tyler
of Columbia Co., Georgia, "the only brother and two sisters of the said deceased and sole heirs of the
estate of the said deceased, William Tyler," made a deed to Dredzil Pace.
On May 12, 1807.--Estate of William Tyler, deceased, was divided between Alice Allen, Henry Tyler,
Peggy Tyler and William Berry in right of his wife.
On 6 May 1816 final returns were made on the estate of William Tyler.
These returns show receipt from Alice Allen, Peggy Tyler, and Reuben Tyler, administrator of the estate of
Henry Tyler, deceased."
Also, recent yDNA testing of a descendant of the Orangeburg William Tyler and Ann Bennett,
through Thomas Bennett Tyler, shows no relatedness to the descendant of Francis Tyler and Anne Strother.
The descendant of William and Ann has a haplotype R-M269 and the results are posted at the
Orangeburgh District, SC, DNA Project
test #323778
Additionally, the information concerning the William Tyler of Virginia with Revolutionary War service and
bounty seems to be in error. The information I have found shows the bounty to the Virginia soldier was issued
in what is now Jefferson County, Kentucky.
The researcher and descendant of Henry Tyler of Oglethorpe County, Georgia and I are very close yDNA matches.
His line is complete to Henry Tyler, the immigrant to Williamsburg. My ancestry is from John Tyler, son of
Henry Tyler, the immigrant. The researcher and I are haplotype I-M223, and we match 66/67 with a genetic
distance of 1.
The descendant of William Tyler and Ann Bennett did not closely match our results,
because the indication is the Orangeburg Tylers are not descended from Henry Tyler or Williamsburg.
Michael Tyler
8/19/2015:
Ryan Tyler of Atlanta has also been exchanging information with Al, and by the results of yDNA testing,
his line seems to be closely related to the Orangeburg/Willow Swamp Tyler clan.
My interest in the Tyler genealogy got started a while back when Rebecca Tyler Allen published information in
which she had my John Tyler in Hanover County, Virginia and Chowan, North Carolina having increases to his
family simultaneously. My attempts to exchange information with her ended with her refusal to acknowledge
any potential error.
I participated in yDNA testing after seeing two published test results which linked back to Henry Tyler of
Williamsburg. The problem is the results were of different haplotypes. One lineage used Henry Tyler's son
Henry and the other used Henry Tyler's son John with the Chowan, North Carolina children.
My research indicates Henry Tyler's son John Tyler located in the area which became Hanover County,
Virginia and he and his descendants stayed in Virginia. My results showed the same unrelatedness to the
John Tyler of Chowan as the descendant of Henry Tyler's son Henry.
I recently came across information which shows George Catchmaid imported 67people to Perquiman's in
North Carolina and was issued a land patent April 1, 1663 for the same. One of the persons was named
Jno. Tyler. I believe this person is the origin of the Chowan Tyler line since Perquiman's is adjacent Chowan.
Thanks,
Michael Tyler

I found your research on the Williams-Tyler families on the Web today,
from 1980.
I am a descendant of Theophilus Williams from Rev. John E. Williams. He
was father to Theophilus J Williams, who in turn was father to Uriah
Lee, and Uriah Lee fathered my grandfather Romie Lee Williams. I have
been doing some family research on Ancestry.com, and I have also reached
a dead end on the original Theophilus Williams b. 1777. Some of the
family trees on Ancestry have Theophilus erroneously as a son of General
James Henderson Williams a revolutionary war hero in the Carolinas. I
am curious if you have any further information on the origins of
Theophilus' family.
Thanks,
Perry S. Williams
Perry,
Nice to meet you. If you don't mind, I'd like to add your note to the
website; sometimes that will spark someone else's memory. Whatever I
have, I've put there. For a while we had that note about Gen. James
Williams, but Leland (CC'ed here) pointed out DNA has proven that to be
incorrect (see his note above).
Just to make sure I understand, Uriah Lee's father was Theophilus born
in 1833 to John Williams born 1804? My grandfather, who wrote the
history I'm trying to maintain, didn't follow that branch of the family
at all. I'd be happy to add that in, or more if you're willing to
provide more or a link to that extra information.
Also, if you'd like I can try to send your note along to Barbara
Simpson; she's hails from another son of Theophilus and mentioned in a
note a 1790 census of Duplin, NC (see note 16 above)
Thanks for the note,
-David
Dave,
Thanks so much for the reply.
Here's what I know from some research on Ancestry.com, but I have to be careful because some of that
info is not always correct, what I am giving you seems to be correct.
Per the history from your father, John Williams (son of Theophilus) was a Baptist minister. He fathered
a number of children with supposedly a Mary Wolfe, one of whom was Theophilus J. TJ then married
Elizabeth Boatwright in SC. At some point at the time of the War Between the States, TJ and Eliz ended
up in Georgia, where he joined the 25th GA infantry, Ogeechee Rifles at Screven County. Best I can tell,
TJ was in the service until 1864 and mustered out. TJ and Elizabeth had several children, including Uriah
Lee who was born in Eastman GA in 1873. Uriah ended up in Virginia in 1900 with his mother Elizabeth (TJ
died in 1879). Uriah met Roxie Haley (whose background I have had problems tracing) a Virginia girl
apparently. They married in 1900 and had 3 sons and several daughters. One of the sons, Romie Lee
married Wilma Page and they were the parents of my father Harold Page Williams. At some point when I get
a chance I can get you some more full info.
I too have seen the Theophilus from 1790 in Duplin. He is listed a Theophilus Esq., and my guess is he
would have been educated which as your father pointed out is unlikely with our Theophilus. My limited
research puts him more generally in the South Carolina area.
All the info I gave you is available on Ancestry.com under Williams family tree, pwilliams12. Here is
a copy if you can get the link:

Hello Cousin Perry, thanks for interest in our part of the family. You have seen on the website that my nephew,
David, maintains, that we are focused on Williamses and Tylers that intersect in two marriages:
- 1880 Braxton Bragg Williams and Catherine Annie Elizabeth Tyler
- 1895 Daniel Swift Tyler and Janie Williams
Catherine and Daniel were siblings. Braxton was half nephew of Janie.
I have attached a four generation report on Descendants of Theophilus Williams, which shows, as David told you,
that my father (David's grandfather), did not trace your line, nor have I picked it up from other sources. What
I have in my FTM stops with Uriah Lee shown as a child of Theophilus James.
Best wishes, Leland

David,
In doing some research, I found this
article written about Capt
Hiram W. Williams, one of Theophilus' sons, born in 1815.
It's a very interesting one about the influence of his family in the Crisp County area of Georgia.
Near the end of the article, it states that Hiram was of Scotch-Irish descent. It also states that
his father was an early settler to the South Carolina area, and that his father (who would have been
Theophilus) fought in the Revolution. I assume they must have meant grandfather, as of course Theophilus
was born in 1777 after the start of the war.
My assumption has always been that our family was Welsh or English.
Just thought you might be interested:

Hi David,
Just to update you, I have found some more info on the line up from Theophilus. Apparently, Theophilus's father
was Sampson, and his mother Mary Odom. They lived in the Edgefield district of SC. According to this source
which I will copy you on, Sampson's father was Roland Williams Sr, which means there must have been a Roland Jr.
Since I last emailed you, I have done some DNA testing and found matches with Williams who appear to have come
from Isle of Wight, VA. The matches aren't extremely close, but show a possible common origin of these families.
I may do some more in-depth testing later this month.
Below is a link to a blogger who has done some work in the Edgefield area on the pioneer families, Odoms, Barnes,
Williams, Watsons, etc. You might find it useful.

On FamilySearch and Ancestry I have not yet found a direct connection to Roland Sr. and Sampson, or any other families.
