We took advantage of weather which was the opposite of last year's to visit the National Zoo and check on their new lion cubs. Of course no trip to the Zoo is complete without a stop (or in our case two) at the Pizza Playground. Unfortunately, there is talk of getting rid of the petting zoo and it's unclear if the playground (which is right next to the petting zoo) would go as well. Apparently it's expensive to feed the cows.
Robert had lots of fun (did I mentioned we stopped off there twice) playing king of the pizza, cheese slider, cheese skier, olive pit and who knows what all.
The king of jungle was resplendent and taking in his kingdom in the great weather.
But he was upstaged by the cubs... Cubs hiding the bushes (impossible to see in the top left corner). Cubs chewing a mom's ear. And cubs attacking each other.
Cubs getting a drink and a bath at the same time.
After the "charismatic macro vertebrates," we checked out the invertebrates: crabs, lobsters and ants (along with other creepy crawlies). Robert was really into the ants, maybe because we've had a couple invasions in the house. The lobster is huge, about the size of a small dog.
We were side-tracked by the elephant trail. They are still working on that exhibit, or so it seemed. And Sarah is still not happy that the giraffes were moved out to make room for more elephant romping space. But following the elephant tracks is fun.
The side-tracking happened on our way to check out the wolves -- Robert was studying wolves in school. This is a maned wolf, and as the sign says, it looks like a fox on stilts. It was a great day to be a the zoo and served as a great reminder to renew our membership.
