Sarah was working during Robert's spring break but David was able to take the week off. We took the train to Atlanta as an adventure, and to check up on David's mom while Loren and Susan were away. The train ride is about 13 hours -- a bit longer than driving, a lot longer than flying, but more adventerous than either. I was hoping we'd be able to sleep better than we did. The sleeper car really is the ideal way to go (but also expensive). Robert started off his spring break week with a burger from the lounge car (Monday's burger). Then changed into PJs, and crawled under a blanket to get some sleep. He did get some, but even the dim lights are kind of bright and the footrests didn't work on the southbound Cresent train. After leaving about 7pm Monday, we got into Atlanta about 8:30 Tuesday morning. Sally happened to be downtown then, so we got a ride to Decatur with her. After a bit of recovery and clean up, we talked Sam (who also happened to be down from Nashville) into a game of croquet after a visit to check in on SMom. Sally and Sam were able to join us for dinner, so we went to the Brick Store Pub (Robert's Tuesday burger).
On Wedensday, we went to the Aquarium. One of our favorite sites in Atlanta. As an extra bonus this trip, there were divers working in the tanks. One set of divers were polishing the walk-through tunnel and one set were working the tropcial reef.
Robert decided he needed a picture of the rare " butt fish" for his blog. Robert also was on the look out for the piranhas in the freshwater tanks; and then he saw them.
After we had lunch there (Robert's Wednesday hamburger), we finished our visit trying to recreate one of Sarah's favorite photos of Robert next to the jellyfish tank. Sally had to work that afternoon so we met up with her in the evening at the Butter and Cream where she's the pastery chef. She arranged for dairy free dark chocolate sorbet for Robert -- which he clearly enjoyed.
On Thursday, we took Sally to Stone Mountain (our first time there -- not hers). We started with the walk to the top to admire the views. As advertised, Atlanta was visible (and we think the buildings in the middle are Decatur). Then we entered the amusement park area. No photos of us talking Sally into the SkyHike ropes course -- they were very particular about not having anything in your pockets. Robert tried the climbing wall, which was fun and challenging.
Being in Georgia, the carving in the stone is of confederate heros: Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson. The informational plaques were clearly written from a southern standpoint. It was easy for us to overlook that and and enjoy the park. Sally had to work that night, but she had time to run us through the car wash -- Robert's first ride-through car wash! And Robert and I headed to Farm Burger for his Thursday burger.
After all that excitement, it was hard to head back to the train station and the train north (fortunately, Robert was well prepared for waiting on the late arriving traing -- and for the ride home). To prepare for the trip, Sally took us to Yeah! Burger for Robert's Friday burger: completing a week's worth of Spring Break burgers.
