The title of this may be misleading. We drove down to Boone in late January for the St. Luke's memorial service for Sarah Williams, but most of these pictures are after the fact. For the reception, we put up these boards of photos (along with a slide show we projected and even more photos on a table). Loren took these pictures of the boards.
After the service and reception, Steve arranged (thanks to a bit of name dropping) to get the family a large table at Lost Province. As we were leaving, Sarah and Robert (along with a couple other folks from our group and other restaurant patrons) stopped by the stage to dance.
We rounded out the day with more visiting (and, for those inclined, Scotch tasting) at the White Fence Farm, where Loren, Susan, Betty and Julie were staying. Cyndi wanted to be sure there was a photo of her with her brothers — with Loren and Sarah's illness, we invited her to join in our family's odyssey.
On Sunday, we drove home hoping to visit with Martha on the way. Unfortunately, she had already made plans. Fortunately, we decided to stop at Petersburg National Battlefield — prodded by Robert's summer camp plans. They happened to be firing off the 12 pounder while we were there. It impressive both to hear and feel the shock wave as they set off a charge about half the size of what would have been used in battle. While it was pretty late in the day, we did manage to take in a couple of the spots after watching the movie in the visitor's center. All of us learned much more than we knew about the final months of the Civil War. We were finally asked to leave by the very nice park policeman as it was getting dark.
