For Mother's Day we took a quick trip up to New Jersey to visit with Harry and Elle then on to the Central Park Zoo to
(finally) see some penguins. It was cool and windy -- good penguin weather.
|
We enjoyed catching up with Harry and Elle then they saw us off on a trip into the City to
track down penguins. Once we got to the zoo, the penguins didn't disappoint. We even saw Gus and friend, the polar
bears (from the other pole) and a snow leopard. All in all a fun zoo trip.

Actually the real reason for the trip was Ian and the Garfield High School Jazz Band playing at Lincoln center.
Garfield was one of 15 schools invited to compete in the
Essentially Ellington Jazz competition.
|
And our own Ian Z. plays piano in the band. They were the first band Monday morning so we got to watch a quick sound
check before the seats filled up and the full band came back to play. The were great of course! It's too
bad we couldn't wait to see how they did, but we headed back south after a very nice lunch. On the way back we heard
Garfield made the final three and got to play in the Avery Fisher Hall at
Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis!

Of course the whole band was great, but we were there to cheer on Ian. David Z. let us know that Garfield won first
place and solo awards for all!
|
Robert enjoyed the Garfield set then he was so excited he needed to run around a bit. So we found the practice
stage overlooking Columbus Circle (and then ran around Columbus Circle a bit after lunch and before getting back
on the train to the car).
