We headed back down to Prince William Forest Park for Robert's first camping trip. Robert and I checked it out last week and we liked what we saw; we decided to show it off to Sarah this time. We all had a lot of fun. The campground has 3 loops, each with about 35 spaces in them. "C" loop is for tent camping only; the other two loops allow RVs but have no hookups. We were the only folks in the "C" loop and there were probably only 5 other campsites in use on a warm Sunday night late in October (I only noticed one other tent. The temperature was in the high 70s during the day and got down to around 50 at night.
It took a little while after we set up the tent to coax Robert out of his new "fort." That gave Sarah and I some time to set up our kitchen.
Eventually, he came out and helped us settle in.
We got there a bit later than planned after a slow start and a stop off at Dan's to set up an Internet connection downstairs for him (he's back home after his accident, but is happy to avoid the stairs as much as possible with his hemi-cane). So after setting up the tent and doing a quick tour of the neighborhood, we had dinner, roasted some marshmallows over the stove (there's a ban on open fires because it's been so dry), and then it was Robert's bed time. He did not seem to miss a beat settling into the tent with a story by flashlights.
The next morning, Robert showed off his new PJs with dinosaurs on them. Then we fixed French Toast for breakfast and broke camp. Robert helped pack up and move stuff back to the car. Then we stopped off at the visitor center where Robert tried on some antlers. He decided he didn't really want to wear those all the time.
We went back around the Piedmont trail (Robert wanted to show it to Sarah) before heading home for lunch. All in all, a very successful camping trip. The only unexpected surprise was the sound of the Marines next door to the park: They were very civilized and didn't start shooting until after 8 am.
