Robert and I started Memorial Day weekend early on Friday. The daycare was closed and I'm currently unemployed, so that worked out well. We took a short walk to the African American Heritage Park (where we've been a couple times before: February, '05 and September, '05). While there is no playground equipment, there's a nice loop path over a couple bridges and next to a (very dirty) creek. We saw ducks in the creek and raced to the bridges and the shady bits under the trees when we weren't drawing maps on the path.
That worked up an appetite so we had some Fish and Chips at Eamonn's (on the right) and a muffin and juice at the Uptowner (on the left) before heading home. (Can you tell I'm having fun playing with the phone camera? I just wish I would stop taking so many photos of the inside of my pocket...)
Saturday we headed back to Oxon Hill Farm to see the animals and avoid the tourist/memorial day weekend crowds. We spent a bit too much time reading books and playing around the house and were not quite as early as we had hoped to be. So it was pretty warm for our visit.
The cows and bulls were happy to say "Hi!" And Robert was happy to reply in kind. We saw one pig eating a late-fore-noon snack on our way to the horses, who were happy to nibble a bit of grass from our hands (but they probably would have preferred an apple).
It's still very surprising to me how few people know about or visit this farm. It's so close to highway 95 that we could hear the rumble of the motorcycles gathering for the annual Rolling Thunder Memorial Day ride. And yet, we just saw a couple other families there.
After a juice break in the shade, a look at a sapling growing in the hollow of a elder tree and the map-like roots of another tree, we made our way back home.
Sarah whipped up (blended, actually) a yogurt, blueberry, banana milkshake as the first course of our lunch. After a long nap, we headed over to Romeo's house for a dinner party with Robert's friends: Romeo, Caroline and Ciaran. It was good weather for the pool that Cecily brought over for the kids to play in. After dinner, Robert enjoyed flying his "plane" a bit after we got home even though it was past his bed time.
On Sunday, we went out to Great Falls to climb around on some rocks and try to beat the heat again. We saw some Herons and kayakers, found plenty of rocks for Robert to climb on and trails and fields to run around in.
It's been a while since we were there last, maybe next time, we'll remember this new way to document Robert's growth: he's taller than the '85 and '96 floods, but has a ways to go before he is as tall as the '37 flood.
