Nice day for the River Robert enjoyed his chance to ride on the back of Sarah’s boat — but he joined me in the canoe before we got to any of the riffles. Robert wanted to take Sarah to snack island for our ritual snack before seeing how far up we can paddle. This time we had to cheat and line the canoe over some rocks — it was too shallow and steep to paddle up. But we did get above the main rapid so we could paddle back down it. We saw a truly odd sight: several folks on surfboards with really long canoe paddles. I guess it’s the new craze in whitewater (and still water — some of the paddle boarders did not have helmets). It’s a very odd thing to see on the river and seems a bit unstable to me (but I guess my squirt boat may have looked unstable too). I remember Steve telling me about running the Lochsa in Idaho years ago and seeing someone surfing on a surfboard — and I’ve seen a couple folks at Rocky Island — but not with paddles (which, of course makes it make more sense to me). OK… Just a little more sense. It still seems really unstable and like a long way to fall if you get knocked off (especially on a really shallow spot like the Potomac at 2.66). |

First Day of Kindergarten! After quite a summer, Robert was duly delivered to his first day of Kindergarten. Was a little nervous maybe, but opened a book to a picture of the Golden Gate bridge and started constructing model of same using wooden blocks. A new friend or two came by to help. He doesn’t know he has cookies in his lunch. I predict it will be a good day. |
