We took our now tradional trip to Assateague Island for the Fourth again this year. This time we went earlier and stayed longer. As Seileen pointed out, it's even nicer earlier when there are fewer folks there. Also new this year: we brought sandbags and Sarah picked up a great beach cart and new sun tent.
Not new this year: great weather (we've had it before, but this may have been the best) and lots of boogie boarding. The oversized Jenga set (that Kenna is about to knock down), however, is new.
We loaned Kanna (on the left) one of our boards and she and Robert proceeded to see who could get the farthest up the beach.
Of course, you have to not get chundered in order to get up onto the beach...
The horses, of course, made an appearance — several actually. They broke into a mosquito netting tent for some pretzels. More impressive, we had a small group who got one of the group sites so they were in the middle of the ˜ 100 folks. And they were not so good at pony proofing, so the ponies liked them — too bad that they were in our midst.
To be fair, we did have some cloudy rainy days. Tuesday, when we showed up, was nice. Wednesday (when all the previous photos were taken) was gorgeous. Thursday was a bit rainy; Friday (when the next batch of photos were taken) was obviously fantastic. Saturday was rainy again and we left earlier than planned as it seemed like the fireworks up the coast might get cancelled due to weather.
There were short and long board surfers (and standup board and surf kayaks) in addition to our boogie boards. And the kids were not the only ones who got to play. Here's Sarah on one of our boards.
Clearly having a good time.
And frisbee, and the crafts tent did tie dye one afternoon. Robert's shirt turned out great and perfect for the Fourth: red, white and blue.
Not quite volley-ball or rugby, this game seemed to be sort of ulimate frisbee played with a ball. Robert tells me it's Handball, and they play it in school during PE. As usual, we're already planning the return trip next year...
