With a break in the hot weather, we decided to take a shakedown cruise. A chance to test out our camping equipment to see what we have that's fine, what needs to be fixed, what needs to be replaced and what might be nice to add.
We drove up to Rocky Gap State Park in Maryland. Not quite a random choice but close: David took one of his early favorite 4X5 photos there (sadly not scanned so hard to share here). We are unlikely to return. It worked well for our shakedown cruise: we learned about several things we'll change in the future. But the park is really too close to highway 68 — convenient but there was a lot of distant truck noise and Sarah didn't like the bathroom lights being as bight and poorly aimed as they were.
That's not to say we didn't have good time. There are several trails and we enjoyed a loop of "Rocky Trail" and "Settler's Trail" adding a bit of "Everitt's Mountain Trail" to check out Rocky Gap Creek.
After a bit of lunch, we put the Esquif canoe in the lake (first time it's been in the water in likely a decade) and checked out the sights from that vantage. While the facilities were fine and the campsite nice, we have recommendations to try out "Cunningham Falls" next time.
