For the nineth year, we were invited to join the crazy beach camping friends at Assateague Island for the fourth of July. This year, we drove out on Wednesday and came back Saturday. A first for us, fog on Thursday morning. The fog kept it a bit cooler in the morning (not cool, mind you). It burned off and turned into a beautiful day for boogie boarding.
The next day was another specatular one. More boogie boarding and some cool sand castle building. The ponies even stopped by to check out the sand castles.
Saturday, the next day, was the big day! The robust floatation device race. We were confident in the sleek design of our entry. The purble team was poised to win against the gold team and there huge monstrosity.
The race start well, with our lead puller way in front. But note the guy in the white hat. He was our downfall.
After being well ahead on the lap out, Mr. White Hat pulled our team out and away from the corner. A corner slowly drifting in the current further north, giving the dread gold team the inside of the curve. While their monstrosty was back on the beach first, we were not happy with the way they won. But that still made for a fun morning. After the race, we packed up and headed back to Alexandria with sand in our shoes and memories of an Assateague trip with no mosquitos, another first. And for anyone heading that way, we recommend Drummer's Cafe in the Hotel Atlantic in Berlin Maryland — it was a great lunch on the drive home.
