Cousins Weekend, September 2024

Slide show option — just for looking at the pictures.
We had a really fun weekend in Lake Murray, SC. David's cousin, Carolee, invited her cousins to a family weekend on the lake. David decided it would be an excellent occasion to use his father's recipe for smoking. (There was too much, or course, but leftovers are good.)
With family living close by, Carolee arranged for housing options and Sarah and David really enjoyed Alex, Kaitlynn and Gunter's house (and getting to meet Kaitlynn and Gunter). It was a short walk from the hub of activity at Carolee's house. And has great mornings with an egret and heron stopping by for a breakfast fish.
Carolee and Doug's house made a great base for water (and indoor) activities. It was truly fun to see Gunter enjoying "Uncle Lee's" trucks with Lee. Alex and Kaitlynn are clearly raising him up well.
When we weren't playing with trucks (or eating too much great food brought by everyone), we were on the water. There was a fantastic variety of water craft; lots of options for everyone.
With this much family together, we took advantage of the opportunity for a group photo. Who needs a tripod when you have a handy paddle board? In the complete group photo, that's Helen, Steve, David, Loren, Carolee (in the back), Susan, Sarah, Lee (in the back), Kaitlynn, Alex (in the back) and Doug holding Gunter.
Steve realized the weekend gathering would be a great time for one more family activity. David and his brothers, Steve and Loren, said farewell to their mother's sister Julie this spring. Steve had her ashes and her mother's (their grandmother's) ashes. Julie wanted hers to be spread at Grayson Highlands State Park and liked the idea of her mother's ashes going there as well. And Steve had a final set of Loren, Steve and David's mother's ashes as well.
So the brothers, Helen and Sarah (Susan needed to get back to Decatur) visited Grayson Highlands the following Monday. Steve and Helen had scattered some of the Loren's (the brothers father's) ashes there years ago and led the way to the same rock outcropping. It is a beautiful setting with spectacular weather — the rain held off while we were hiking and climbing over the rocks with sun and clouds swirling around.
Steve really did pick a lovely place. That's Loren, Steve, Helen, Sarah and David against the clouds. And Steve and Helen in the photo below that.
Steve, David and Loren on the rock where we scattered the ashes. Steve brought a bit of bourbon to toast the "Green Women". And Loren had the perfect quote from Psalms 121: "I lift up my eyes onto the hills"
