After our return from Assateague Island, Sarah had to go back to work. But Robert and I still had some free time and since I'd never been to the Atlanta Aquarium and he'd been twice, a trip to Atlanta was called for.
It is clearly a cool place. And we had an expert guide in Robert's cousin Sally. The dolphin show was a good bit over the top (in my book; Robert liked it) -- I really don't need live signing, a fictional story line and theatrical lighting to enjoy dolphins. The penguin tunnel was open but too crowded for me -- thank you Sally for taking Robert through.
The big tunnel was crowded, but not being a dark crawl, was really great. It's clearly the closest thing to diving you could pull off inside. The tank is huge (has to be to hold whale sharks) and they have the largest single piece of glass as one huge window (Plexiglas really, 17 inches thick).
And on the other side of the glass (at least while we were there), a couple divers talking about the fish in the tank and generally showing off. It was fascinating and the underwater microphone worked pretty well so the divers could take questions from the audience, "How do you get to do that?" "Volunteer once you're a certified diver." After we got back home, Robert hoped on his bike for a couple laps around Loren and Susan's block -- that orange speck is him way down the road. Then Carmen came over and they had a great time with Sam's Legos.
The next day, Robert and I took some mail over to my mother to say hi and check in on her. She enjoyed the cards and read them to us and we talked a bit about the pictures on the cover. Then Loren took us for a trip on the Upper Hooch (Chattahoochee River) -- we were really taking advantage of haven driven down there with bikes and canoe. I think that was the most rapids our canoe has seen -- and Robert and I wiped out in the middle ledge of triple ledges. No one was hurt and Robert later said that was the most fun part of the trip.
Susan brought my mom over for dinner with us that night as we were getting boating stuff put away. We ended up watching some of the Braves game (they beat the Phillies). We picked some cherry tomatoes from Carmen's garden (her family was headed out of town), and then drove back up on Sunday. A quick but very fun trip.
