Concluding a summer week of no-camps in August, we drove up to New Jersey to check in on Harry and Elle. Of course, as part of that, we did some site seeing. The Museum of Math was underwhelming. But the full Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty experience we really interesting. I guess we didn't quite get the full experience as it's impossible to get last minute tickets to go into the Statue. That just makes for a really good reason to return.
One of the many reasons it was interesting is Sarah's new job at U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The radical shift in immigration policy from the heyday of Ellis Island to today is pretty stunning. The short ferry ride over was fun and crowded on such a pretty summer day. Ellis Island is the first stop. We watched a brief documentary and then wandered around.
That's Robert in the middle of great hall (and Sarah sneaking up to him on the right) above and the two of them on the left.
Outside is the wall of names listing immigrants who passed through Ellis Island. At least, that's the theory. After Harry and his sister Betty had their father Isadore's name added, they found out he actually entered the country from Canada into to Detroit.
From Ellis Island, it's an even shorter ferry ride to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty. We took the required photos to prove we were there... Then we headed back to Somerset, a nice dinner and uneventful drive home.
