Galapagos 2025 part 5: Isabela: Moreno Point, Urbina Bay

Isabela Island is the largest of the Galapagos and we were there for two days visiting various parts. On Thursday, we started with a panga ride before more deep water snorkeling (both at Punta Moreno). Isabella hosts a very large population of marine iguanas, and they did not disappoint.
Here we learned sea lions are not just playful with snorkelers, they also like to nip at the iguana tails as they swim around and fight for dominance. The penguins and flightless cormorants seemed right at home on the volcanic rocks as well. |
|
The snorkeling was again fantastic: sea turtles, cormorants and penguins in the water with us.
After another lovely, hot lunch, we made a wet landing and walked around Urbina Bay a bit. Of course there were iguana (land iguanas are yellow, marine are black) and some native giant tortoises as well — we don't know if these were raised at the Charles Darwin center or not.
Even from the beach the snorkeling was excellent, with spotted eagle rays and sea turtles to keep us company.
We enjoyed a lovely sunset before dinner. And then we got some great star gazing in from the bench in the front of the boat before the moon rose again.
Part 6: Friday 1/17: Fernandina: Espinoza Point, Isabela: Tagus Cove.
